This is the third book in the Cygnus series by Craig Martelle. I have read these three books in quick succession. This is the best of the bunch. Oddly enough the first book is the worst and then the second book is pretty good but this is the best.Cygnus Arrives is a close sequel to Cygnus Expanding. In this book the crew of the Cygnus-12 carry on re-discovering humanity's colonies and end up on earth. This book has great action sequences and some good character development. A lot of the inter-personal relationships are getting resolved. The modified characters have lost their Spell SInger resemblance and become more original as the series have progressed. Their are still elements of Anne McCaffrey especially the Rowan series of books.
Martelle continues to develop his action scenes and has managed to get real suspense into these now. I'm not sure that his sense of humor has got much better though. It's still oddly twisted. I don't know why there was a "Car Talk" reference; I got it but don't know why it was there.
This series deserves more books and I hope it doesn't drop off Craig's list (my bad) of things to write as the cliff hanger at the end of this book needs to be resolved. This series doesn't seem to get a lot of love given that this book has few reviews. It really does deserve more praise and reviews as it's one of the best out there. Come on Craig let's have more Cygnus rising books.

I have found all the books in the Free Trader and Cygnus series to be entertaining and the author makes you care for his characters. I can't wait to see how they resolve their return to Vii
This was my favorite book in the Cygnus Space Opera so far. Humanity returns to earth. Why should it go as planned? None of their other adventures have!! This series keeps getting better. By this point, I can almost keep track of the Wolfoids and imagine how they move. I think the Hillcats are my favorite, though. If you've ever been owned by a cat, you'll understand! Sci-fi fans give this series a try!
I love this series. I love how the different humanoids work together and that Cygnus is a peaceful planet. Out in space you gotta love how the marines kick ass. And how they get along with their Hillcats. Without the levity of the 'cats and them putting their humans in their place,space might be a boring place. But, with all the camaraderie between the crew and the love for one's own and the disappointment they feel when meeting hostility makes this space opera worthwhile.
I really like the interaction between the different intelligent species. One thing in the series turned me off. That was the concept that the EM drive could accelerate electrons to drive the ship but capture them again so nothing was lost. Shooting them at a plate if I remember correctly. Another was Major Cain taking both shuttles down to the heavy gravity planet where they encountered the killer drones. That thoughtlessness annoyed me to where I stopped reading. But I'm glad I came back to finish the book. There are often things that go against what we think we know. Overall I enjoyed this series and plan to keep reading even if now and then it seems fantastical.
Pretty good "light" space opera. Mostly character and story focused, and science is intentionally kept light. All the characters aren't especially deep, but they are believable and entertaining. Some decent humor mixed in too.
There was one cringe-worthy physics mistake when Briz was talking to Jolly about the capabilities of the alien bot ship. Something along the lines of "How fast were they going?" "A thousand gravities!"
Gravities or Gs indicate acceleration, change of speed over time. A better question would have been "how fast were they decelerating?" since that would better convey the bot ship's surprising capability.
Pretty much a typical space adventure. I did enjoy the characters in the story.
As I wait for the next adventure of the Marines.....or the back stories of the worlds that were featured....? Soon?
